As the takeaway industry continues to grow, it offers convenience to millions, but the environmental impact it leaves behind is staggering. Every day, over 60 million plastic products are used on takeaway platforms, and every week, more than 400 million takeaway orders crisscross the streets of China. This results in an overwhelming amount of waste—400 million disposable packaging boxes and plastic bags are discarded weekly. Most of this waste cannot be recycled, leading to millions of tons of plastic being incinerated or sent to landfills, with approximately 8 million tons ending up in landfills annually.
There are several types of takeaway packaging, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. These include plastic containers, biodegradable eco-friendly boxes, tinfoil containers, and waterproof kraft paper boxes. While some of these options are more environmentally conscious, the reality is that the majority of the industry still relies on plastic packaging, specifically PP5 plastic containers. These containers are favored for their durability, affordability, and good sealing properties. However, despite their short service life—often used for less than an hour—plastic lunch boxes take centuries to degrade, creating long-term environmental damage.
While some alternatives, such as biodegradable lunch boxes, are available, many merchants hesitate to switch due to concerns about cost. Currently, a standard plastic lunch box costs about 1 yuan, but the price of a biodegradable option could rise to 1.5 or even 2 yuan. For many businesses, this increase in packaging cost could reduce profits or even lead to a loss of customers.
Takeaway packaging waste is accumulating rapidly and won’t degrade for centuries. It’s essential for food delivery platforms to take responsibility and promote the use of biodegradable packaging. But consumers also play a vital role. By raising awareness about eco-friendly habits, particularly among younger generations, we can encourage more sustainable consumption.
Together, businesses, consumers, and takeaway platforms must work to change harmful habits and embrace greener, more sustainable options. The time for action is now.
